Right Start Integrated Reader – Provides a phonetic approach to teaching reading.

• Research has indicated that the major reason in reading success is the child’s “phonemic awareness”.
• The discovery of the nature and importance of phonemic awareness is said to be the single greatest breakthrough in reading this century (Adams 1990)
• Early knowledge of letter-sound relationship sets the stage for reading success.
• Phonetic instruction encourages children to examine all the letters of each new word, linking sound to each letter and identifying previously unseen words
• Initial phonetic instructions is best done with a small set of consonants and vowels.
• Children should become familiar with irregular high frequency words “sight words”, for example: you, are, the etc.
• Children need to be read to every day both at school and at home. They should be exposed to a wide range of books and materials.
